Avoid Fallout from Appliance Vendors and Choose Managed Security Services for Security Event and Log Management

Leading Managed Security Services Provider Offers Significant Savings with SELM Service for Affected Cisco MARS Customers

CHICAGO (November 12, 2009) - As Cisco announces that it will not support new, third-party devices for its security information and event management tool MARS, Trustwave is touting the benefits of using managed security services to solve business problems, rather than fully configured appliances or software. Trustwave is the leading provider of on-demand data security and payment card industry compliance management solutions to businesses and organizations throughout the world.

Managed security services help solve business problems without buying more technology. As businesses move away from viewing security as a technology issue to more of a business and compliance risk, adoption of on-demand solutions continue to gain in popularity.

Trustwave's Security Event and Log Management (SELM) service helps ensure that customers won't be affected with end-of-life products, because Trustwave delivers SELM as a subscription-service in which Trustwave - not the end user - is responsible for the technology infrastructure. Trustwave's delivery of SELM as a service and not as a drop ship product solves the capital problems associated with investing in hardware and software. Working with Trustwave, customers solve their business problem directly for a fixed monthly fee rather than a large up-front investment plus the ongoing management burden.

"These customers bought into the idea that an appliance would help secure their organization, solve a business problem and increase company efficiency, but instead they're looking for a new solution because of a product lifecycle problem," says Robert J. McCullen, chairman and CEO of Trustwave. "During a down economy, many businesses do not have the capital expenditure to spend on new appliances, which is why implementing log management as a service is the most viable solution today."

Security event and log management helps satisfy multiple requirements for a variety of standards and regulations, including the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). Specifically, Trustwave's SELM satisfies requirement 10 of the PCI DSS, which requires management and monitoring of all logs, regardless of system type or vendor. Trustwave supports a wide range of system logs not recognized by many logging systems, including Point-of-Sale devices and e-commerce payment applications, and consistently and accurately identifies and reports important and PCI-relevant security events.
